About Me
Hello, my name is Scott Catchot, and welcome to Rock Between the Eyes.
If you have been around me for any length of time, you already know that I wear a lot of hats. I am a husband, father, pastor, licensed professional counselor, teacher, writer, martial artist, lifelong learner, and unapologetic geek. Some days I am not entirely sure which hat I am wearing either.
My journey has taken me through a lot of different places and experiences. I spent years teaching in public schools, charter schools, private Christian schools, and even the prison system. I worked as a mental health clinician in the Texas prison system and served as a mental health manager at the Michael and Boyd units after working at the Coffield Unit, the largest prison in Texas. Today, my work continues to bring together counseling, pastoral care, teaching, coaching, and ministry.
But the professional titles only tell part of the story.
I am a Christian, and my faith in Jesus Christ is at the center of how I understand life, people, purpose, suffering, growth, and hope. I am also a martial artist who has spent much of my life learning that discipline is not simply something you practice in a dojo. It is something you carry into every part of life. I enjoy the outdoors, cooking, reading, writing, bushcraft, and exploring whatever happens to catch my curiosity. I am an Eagle Scout, lifelong learner, and what I suppose could reasonably be called a Renaissance man.
That curiosity is a big part of why this blog exists.
Rock Between the Eyes has never been about just one subject. It is a place where faith, psychology, mental health, ministry, martial arts, culture, theology, books, leadership, life lessons, and the occasional completely random rabbit trail can all find a home.
Sometimes I write because I have something figured out. Sometimes I write because I am still trying to figure it out.
Either way, I believe we learn best when we are willing to ask questions, challenge our assumptions, look at things from different perspectives, and remain open to learning something new.
Over the years, I have been blessed to learn from teachers, mentors, pastors, counselors, martial artists, students, patients, friends, family, and people who simply crossed my path for a season. I have received far more than I could ever repay, and one of my goals in life is to pass some of that along.
So that’s what you will find here.
Some serious stuff. Some practical stuff. Some theological stuff. Some mental health and counseling material. Some martial arts. Some stories. Some things I am wrestling with. And probably a few things that make you wonder how my brain got from Point A to Point Z.
That’s okay.
Pull up a chair. Explore a little. Hopefully something here makes you think, encourages you, challenges you, teaches you, or maybe even gives you a laugh.
I have been given much, and I want to give something back.
Welcome to Rock Between the Eyes.
Enjoy the journey.
